The SEDAN network is the largest contiguous RF-only packet network in the United States. In other words, "you can get there from here". In Florida, an operator can move information to the State Warning Point, the National Weather Service in Ruskin or Melbourne, or any one of a number
of local Emergency Operations Centers.

For example, during the floods in South Georgia in 1994, SEDAN served as the only mode of communications with the outside world until utility and state police communications were restored. In South Carolina in 1995, when tornadoes struck the center of the state (Columbia), SEDAN was there to serve as an adjunct for communications with neighboring counties to support Red Cross actions. And when Hurricane Fran struck the east coast of the US in 1996, SEDAN was used to help locate billeting and relocation for many families made homeless by the onslaught and aftermath of the hurricane.

Yes, there are other digital modes, and other packet networks. Each has their place, and each has its potential emergency communications applications. No others were primarily designed as an emergency communications tool, and no others currently have the node density and coverage of the Florida SEDAN. For reliable digital emergency communications over distances greater than 100 miles, the SEDAN is well worth considering as the primary amateur digital emergency communications system.
