Amateur Radio Operators use highly sophisticated equipment to help them accomplish this goal. This equipment includes Home Weather Stations, Computers, Radio equipment, GPS equipment, and specialized software called APRS which is used to identify amateur station location and to track storms as they pass thru the Tampa Bay Area. We also pay close attention to local radar images from NWS at Ruskin, FL Next_Rad Doppler Radar. (See the SKYWARN Page for up to date Radar Images.)
APRS, while it is used almost exclusively here in Florida for WX Info reporting to the local NWS and to the Hurricane Center in Miami, has many useful functions..Visit the WB4APRS Web Site (see APRS DEMOS below) to see more of its useful applications.

APRS programs take advantage of the availability of inexpensive GPS receivers to display the locations of moving stations on your PC.
By connecting your PC computer to any radio network via a radio and TNC or even without a TNC using TCP/IP which most APRS programs now support, then all stations can see the movements of all other stations. APRS permits any number of stations to exchange data just like voice users but without the complexity of maintaining separate point-to-point links. The primary APRS display screen is the MAP display.
